Aesthetics or authenticity?
Hi People
Kamer takes a very clear position on authenticity as the
primary consideration in determining the importance (and monetary value) of
African art work. Here is a quotation from his text:
It is evident that a
mask made a few years ago, or even today, for the purpose of tribal rituals is
an authentic object which has infinitely more value than a 100 year old mask
carved on order for a local functionary or as a gift to a governor or a European
visitor.
While authenticity is a very important factor, I think he
overstates his position (and I don't think things were different in 1974 than
they are today with respect to the relative roles of authenticity and aesthetics
in tribal art). How do others see this issue?

Steve
